We highly recommend you have a friend take your measurements for you! But if not, stand in front of a mirror to ensure accuracy!
Materials you'll need:
- A flexible measuring tape
- A mirror (optional, but can help ensure accuracy)
- Form-fitting clothing or undergarments
Note: When taking measurements, it's important to keep the measuring tape snug against your body without being too tight, and to stand naturally without sucking in your stomach or pushing out your hips. We typically recommend keeping one finger underneath the measuring tape before reading the size as this usually accounts for sitting and breathing room.
1. Bust Measurement:
- Wear a well-fitting bra (preferably one that will give you the shape you desire for your bust in the dress you're selecting - we recommend you do this even if you do not plan on wearing a bra with your dress so that you are taking the measurement of how you'd like your bust to sit once in your dress). Please make sure the bra doesn't compress your bust or has padding unless you plan to wear a padded bra with your dress!
- Stand up straight with your arms out (if a friend is taking the measurement for you).
- Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, making sure it's parallel to the ground and not too tight. The tape should go evenly over your nipples and around your back so that the measuring tape isn't lower or higher in the back, it should be aligned the same in the back. When looking at a mirror you can turn to your side to make sure they are evenly aligned and not lower or higher in the front or back.
2. Waist Measurement:
- Locate your natural waist, which is the narrowest part of your torso. To find it, bend to the side; where your body creases is usually your natural waist.
- Stand up straight again and place the measuring tape around your natural waist. It's usually about an inch above your belly button.
- Keep the tape parallel to the ground and comfortably snug, but not tight.
3. Hip Measurement:
- Stand up straight with your feet together.
- Place the measuring tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks.
- This is typically around 7-9 inches below your natural waist, or where your hip bones are most prominent. When in doubt, measure 9 inches from the waist. This will give you the hip measurement of where most of our dresses hip measurements are on the garment.
- Ensure the tape is parallel to the ground and not too tight.
Additional Tips:
- Use a mirror to check that the measuring tape is positioned correctly and evenly around your body.
- It's often helpful to have someone else assist you in taking measurements to ensure accuracy.
- Make sure the measuring tape is not twisted anywhere around your body.
- Take measurements over form-fitting clothing or undergarments to minimize any discrepancies.
- Keep your breathing steady and relaxed while taking measurements.
